Chinese Essence Qigong is a contemporary form created by the director of Chinese Academy of Somatic Science Professor Fu Yin Chen and his colleagues. He and his colleagues did a long-term study of many different Qigong forms both ancient and contemporary. They summarized and extracted the most essential elements of various kinds of Qigong and created this form. He began teaching the form in North America in 1994.

It consists of five major kinds of Qigong in China: Medical, Daoist, Buddhist, Confucius, and Martial Arts Qigong. Chinese Essence Qigong brings body, spirit, and mind together. The movements are gentle, in slow motion, and very meditative. Essence Qigong can be effective in eliminating diseases, improving health, balancing emotions and refining the spirit. Mu Lan is one of about 300 teachers have been trained to teach this in United States.
