Wholistic Living Series – Elderberry Extract

As cold and flu season approaches, it is a good idea to keep a few supplies readily available to use when you’re not feeling well. They are also great if you find yourself surrounded at work or school by coughing, sneezing and sniffles and want to prevent getting sick.

Elderberry Extract is an excellent remedy to have on hand!

When we go through a change of season it is easier to get sick, because our immune systems are shifting to adapt to different climates. One thing that often happens is people go out mid-day when it is warm, and as the day progresses it gets colder and possibly wetter. If you don’t have the appropriate clothing you leave yourself exposed to the raw elements, increasing your immune system’s vulnerability, and ultimately getting sick.

Elderberry Extract is one remedy that is inexpensive and easy to find (or make!). I love it so much because it is great for warding off the flu, but can also be used if you’re currently fighting it. Studies have shown Elderberry Extract reduces the symptoms and duration of the flu. It has been shown effective against both A and B strains of influenza. Elderberry prevents the spread throughout the respiratory tract by neutralizing the enzyme that the virus uses to penetrate healthy cells.

Elderberry Extract or Sambucus (the berry of a Sambucus Nigra plant) typically comes in syrup form, though tablets and capsules are also available. As a preventative dose, you may take 1-3 times a day, or every 2 hours when actively fighting something. It has a pleasant, sweet flavor, but for some it is a little too sweet. Feel free to add it to your favorite immune boosting tea, or simply add the syrup directly to hot water and drink as a tea.

A local company, Mickleberry Gardens, has a nice product called Elderberry Honey tonic that contains elderberry. It also has some other immune building substances such as Propolis & Echinacea in a fermented honey base.

If you’d like to make it yourself, HERE is a really nice article and recipe for Elderberry Syrup from Wellness Mama.
