Introduction to Wholistic Nutrition
At The Wellspring School for Healing Arts we take nutrition seriously, and have since we first opened. When Rylen started teaching the Amma Bodywork Therapy program in 1985, the class Introduction to Wholistic Nutrition (IWN) was one of the core requisites for students, and it still is today.
The class quickly became extremely popular with both Wellspring students and community members, and – we think – for good reason.
As a holistic health practitioner for over twenty years, Rylen has been teaching, practicing and promoting the importance of nutrition to clients and students throughout her career. Over the years, she developed and tailored the IWN curriculum for various audiences and has taught the class nationally. In July, September and October of this year, Rylen will be presenting the class as a series, one weekend per month, to the Maryland Acupuncture Society. We are fortunate to also have her teach the class right her in Portland, on seven consecutive Tuesday evenings beginning April 9th, from 5:30-7:30pm.
At the center of the class is Rylen’s strong belief in individual, ever-changing needs rather than a silver bullet or a one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition. In her own words:
“There is no one perfect diet. Diets ideally reflect the current needs of the individual whether treating a specific disease or adapting to a different life stage. “
The above tenet rings true regardless of the audience and is what continues to make the class a valuable and experience for everyone. Andrea, a recent IWN student, wrote us:
“Taking this class has been super valuable for me. I felt already pretty well informed about nutrition, but over the course of seven weeks, Rylen gave me a framework for actually making sense of that information and for putting it into practice. The class has changed the way I think about food, and taught me how to choose foods for my individual needs. It’s powerful!”
